Selection of Coating Materials and Binders for Pelleting Onion (Allium cepa L.) Seed

Abstract
Onion seeds have some difficulties for mechanical sowing because of small, irregular and shrunken shapes. Thus it was intended to make seed pelleting for onion seeds to solve these problem. The main object of this study was to find the best materials and binders for onion seeds pelleting. The most desirable shapes which provide a spherical and smooth surface of the pelleted seeds that enhance mechanical singling was made from the mixture of SDZ + Vermiculite + Dalma Ceramic + Coal Ash + Diatomaceous Earth. The pelleted seeds were easily broken after absorbing water and the germination rate of those was 93.3% in lab. The coating effects of binders were quite different depending on the different coating materials, however 8% of arabic gum solution was found a very good in over all materials. The diameter of 2.8¡3.9 §® was optimum sizes of the pelleted seeds in point of germination. Storage test indicated that cold storage of 3¡É was desirable when the pelleted onion seeds would need to store over 6 months. Germination percentage of the pelleted onion seeds was higher (82.3%) than that of bare seeds (70.3%) when planted in the field.
